The
Sunforce 50022 5-Watt Solar Battery Trickle Charger costs around $50.00
per unit (which is about the cost of calling for a boost) and measures 14 X 13 inches by less than an inch thick.
One of Amazon's most highly ranked rv solar battery chargers on the market this unit offers more reliability over longer periods and has a built in diode that prevents over or under charging. The 5 watt capability allows for other devices to be charged (cell phone, etc.) while trickle charging the battery.
Typical Amazon customer comments:
"The Sunforce 50022 5W amorphous solar panel is fantastic. Rugged, exceeded all of the manufacturer's claims, and is reasonably priced. I highly recommend this product. "
"Needless to say, I am 100% thrilled with this item. "

We have 2 85Watt Kyocera KC85T-Equivalent Solar Panels 85Watts Manufactured by Solar-X.
on our sailboat plus 2 - 75 watt Siemens panels, for a total of 320 watts.
For a rundown of the equipment we power with it, check out our solar sailing page.
The panels provide all of our power while we live at anchor (4 months at a time) and have withstood some heavy rainfall and some very spirited passages with no problems.
When using solar energy all of your heating and cooling tasks (fridge, hot water, heat, cooktop) should be delegated to propane or another source.
If you only intend to use the solar panel for lights, fans, water pumps and charging small electronics (camera, gps, iPod, efficient laptops, etc.), one 85 Watt panel will keep your batteries topped up.
Additional panels can be added if you have higher energy loads.
The panels are low maintenance (I wipe them off with a damp cloth periodically or use the morning dew and a clean towel), sealed from moisture intrusion and the aluminum frame is highly resistant to corrosion.
To prevent overcharging of batteries, install a
Sunforce 7 Amp Charge Controller between the panel and the batteries. If you'll have more than 100 watts of solar panel, you'll need a bigger
charge controller.
Motorhomes generally have 2 battery banks, the starting battery and the house bank. A solar trickle charger is adequate to keep the starting battery fully charged even during long periods of non-use.
