RV Solar Panel System

The deeper into the weeds you go the more you need an alternate power system.

Photovoltaic panels are a great way to make power during your vacations and rv journeys no matter where your travels take you,

The irony of trekking out to natural and secluded areas of the world and pulling out the smelly, noisy, polluting generator is not lost on most RV'ers. Solar technology will bring us all closer to what we really want. Peace and Quiet (preferably in a non-smelly environment).

Reminder

On cloudy days you can expect to make about half as much power as on a clear sunny day.

RVer's are no strangers to the solar concept. In fact they were one of the first groups of consumers to benefit from solar energy. Although residential solar systems are popping up in urban locations solar has long been embraced by those who walk on the wilder side.

For decades solar panels have been available to the RVer boater and outdoorsperson and many new model RV's come equipped with a fully installed solar panel or array.

If your "home away from home" didn't come equipped with rv solar you can purchase a portable solar power system for under $1,000. Whether that would be enough to carry your entire energy load depends on how much power you intend to use. Here's a look at the system we have aboard our sailboat. We rarely start the engine when we're at anchor.

Go Power! GP-RV-80 80-Watt Solar Kit with 25 Amp Digital Regulator is capable of recharging rv batteries and running pumps, lights, music or a laptop. Adding a little more juice with the Go Power! GP-RV-95 95-Watt Solar Kit with 25 Amp Digital Regulator or the 110 WATT SOLAR KIT WITH DIGITAL REGULATOR enables you to power devices for longer periods, or power more devices.

Benefits of RV Solar Power

On the plus side an rv solar power system remains out of sight, produces no fumes or smell, makes no noise, requires no fuel, needs very little maintenance and to top it off, it's free to run it!

Think of it, the sweet smell of the air you've come all this way to enjoy, your solar power system refuels itself ~ for free no less ~ the only sound on the air is the twitter of birds and lazy buzzing of the bees. This is what we go camping for.

Reminder

To get the best results, choose a campsite where your panels can be pointed to the south or west and that the line of sight will be unobstructed for at least 4 hours per day.

Even if you're a diehard-roughin'-it kind of camper, there is a lot to be said for the safety of being able to recharge a GPS or cell phone or even a laptop with a navigation program. And it'll keep the camera charged and ready for that once in a lifetime wildlife photo.

These small systems can be used in all sorts of applications. The cabin, boat, outback, guest cottage, you name it. If its in an out-of-the-way place a small solar system can bring power to it.

By using solar power, individuals traveling in an RV can bring with them many of the comforts of home. However, the more power you use, the more solar panels you'll need.

Reminder

Expecting a solar power system to constantly run an air conditioner, heater, microwave and the like is unrealistic unless you carry a LOT of solar panels.

As solar power prices move downward and demand moves upward, RV solar power is becoming more and more commonplace as an offering straight from the manufacturer.

Use your solar power to listen to music, watch a DVD (on a laptop), light the night, pump water or run small appliances. You'll notice that refrigerators and microwaves are not listed. That's because the act of heating or cooling requires huge amounts of electricity which would overtax a small solar system. Small, efficient fridges can be run with solar power but for cooking, stick to propane, gas or wood.

The onset of RV solar power has changed the face of the typical RVer. Many families who normally choose to hotel it are looking at the comforts that RV's can provide.
