Solar Flood Light

Direct the beam of your solar powered flood light toward ornamental plantings or statuary and draw attention to your favorite garden and landscape features.

No need to be home to turn them on, they'll do that by themselves. Intruders don't like well lit homes.

Solar floodlights are available from a variety of companies and come in numerous sizes and shapes.

What to look for when purchasing a solar flood light:

• A durable housing of cast aluminum, good quality plastic or other waterproof, rust proof material will ensure that your flood enjoys a long life during temperature changes, wintry weather and high winds.


• If your light will be mounted in an area where little sunlight will reach it (under eaves, etc.) purchase lights with a remote solar panel that can be placed in the sun. Ensure that the cable is long enough to cover the distance required.


• LED bulbs are long lasting and provide a bright white light (brightness depends on the number of little LED bulbs) a big benefit of LED lights is that they require very little energy which means that your light works for more consecutive hours than other bulbs.


• Ensure that mounting hardware is included and will work or can be adapted for your purposes. Many solar lights include hardware for more than one method of mounting.

Creative ways to use your solar flood light:

• Highlighting Use two or three flood lights at different angles to draw attention to plantings and statuary.


• Spotlighting Direct the floodlight to shine directly toward a favorite garden feature.


• Footlighting Ornamental trees and shrubs come alive at night when you place your floodlight on the ground at the foot of the object you wish to feature and direct the beam of light upward to light your feature from the bottom up.


• Overhead Lighting When you want an area brightly lit for a period of time (a BBQ for example) mount a solar powered flood light (or two) overhead. If you only want the area to be lighted for short periods a solar powered motion light is your best bet.



• Safety Lighting Reduce the risk of falls by lighting stairways, walkways, dark corners and pool areas.


• Backlighting Place one or more spotlights behind a favorite shrub or ornamental tree so that the light shines upward creating a dramatic display. You'll want a remote panel that can be placed in a nearby sunny area because the actual light will in an area where it'll receive minimal sunlight.


• House Numbers Make sure your invited guests (and the pizza guy) can clearly see your house numbers by using a solar powered flood light to illuminate your address numbers. Add some solar pathway lights to safely light their way to your door.
