Solar Powered Fountain
Here's the scoop on solar powered water fountains and their different applications.
Inexpensive and practical is a hard combination to beat but solar fountains offer all that and more. Water features add a whole new dimension to your landscape and
powering them with solar energy makes them a winning combination.
If you want to add sizzle to a ho-hum landscape a solar powered fountain can dress up a patio, garden or
pond without worrying about plug ins and electrical cords. Just place where you want it and bring life to your landscape.
Some solar water fountains are purely for fun and others perform valuable functions.
Pond fountains prevent water from stagnating and becoming algae stricken mosquito hatcheries. Positive benefits to be sure, but they're beautiful, tranquil and graceful
focal points at the same time.
Garden Fountains range from tabletop size to gigantic statuary around which you can
build a serene lounging area.
There are tons of different designs that include the fountain with a pump that is well matched to the needs of that particular fountain. The only thing you need to worry
about is where it'll look and function best in your yard. So easy a monkey can do it! Well, a trained monkey.
How to make your own solar powered fountain using readily available components.
Sometimes you have an image of the perfect garden fountain for a given area and are unable to find it. They are easy to assemble keeping in mind these tips:
- Ensure that your pump is completely submersible.
- Filters prevent foreign matter from entering the mechanism and causing the pump to malfunction.
- Choose the fountain enclosure that suits the area in which it will be displayed. You can use a half barrel, classy ceramic or clay pot, funky galvanized tub, anything that
holds water.
- Add a
Solar Fountain Pump
of appropriate size (flow rate) you can check solar fountains of similar design
and size to determine the appropriate flow rate.
- Fill your chosen vessel with water, place the pump and fountain mechanism in the water, hook it up to the solar panel and voila, you have a home made solar powered fountain.
- Any battery powered fountain can be turned into a solar powered fountain with the addition of a solar panel.
A pump that is undersized will be unable to move the quantity of water you need resulting in a trickle or a burble where you want a shower. A pump with too high a flow rate can suck up the entire contents of your fountain and spew it unceremoniously over your garden. Not, probably, the relaxing effect you were looking for. Checking the "lift" specifications will give you a good idea whether a particular pump will be suitable for your fountain. Lift is a term used to describe how high a stream that pump can produce.
A 17 inch lift works well for a patio sized fountain and you may want a lift as high as 4 feet for some
pond fountains
